Very sorry to hear the news about Fred, a long time Manchester colleague & office 'neighbour'. When I started in M'cr in 1987 Fred was one of the most welcoming of the academic staff, & he was always happy to chat, whether on arcane aspects of neuroscience or on horse-racing.

His professional role prior to retirement made him an enthusiastic educator and he generously shared his knowledge and experience of all matters racing and on a broad range of topics.
